E-filing Both Federal and State Returns

Although H&R Block At Home allows you to e-file the state return and federal return separately, we recommend that you e-file them at the same time. If you choose to e-file them separately, you must e-file the federal return first, then wait for an IRS acknowledgment before e-filing the state return.

Up to 3 state returns can be e-filed per year.

The following states require you to e-file both the state and federal returns together:

The following states allow you to e-file the state and federal returns together or separately:

Note: New Hampshire and Tennessee do not allow e-filing.

If you are using H&R Block At Home online:
  1. Sign in to your H&R Block At Home online account.

  2. On the Welcome Screen, under step 2. File Returns; click the File button to the right of the state return.

  3. Click Next and follow the onscreen prompts to e-file your state return.

If you are using H&R Block At Home software:

To e-file the state return separately: Your federal return must be accepted by the IRS before e-filing your state return separately.
  1. Open your H&R Block At Home return.

  2. Click Take Me To.

  3. Scroll down to the Electronic Filing section, and select E-file State Return Separately.

  4. Click Go To.

  5. Follow the instructions to e-file your state return separately.
